“Political Correctness” and the Undermining of Counterterrorism

I read a cool article recently in the journal “Perspectives on Terrorism.” Jeffrey M Bale, an Associate Professor at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, argues that there are three possible explanations for why people on the left, like Western intellectuals, have a problem criticizing Islam. The first, which Sam Harris discussed in his book The End of Faith, is that a lot of people don’t think religious beliefs have consequences. The second is that even if religious beliefs do on occasion influence behavior, Islam is somehow unique. The third explanation is that although jihadists may be acting in accordance with their religious beliefs, we should really shut up about it. Bale goes on to dig deeper into our apparent unwillingness to face reality. He focuses on political correctness. You can read the article here.
